Cataract is a physiological aging of the intraocular lens. This is actually no disease. With advancing age the lenses in the eye become opaque. Statistics say at 75 years of age there is a cataract rate of 100%.

How are cataract surgeries done?
Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed out-patient surgery in the world. Surgery can be either done with topical anaesthesian (eye-drops) or general anaesthesia. Usually the lens is liquified with ultrasound and aspirated (phako emulsification).
For higher precision and more convenience cataract can also be done with the Femtosecondlaser. Advantages are: higher precision, more comfort, faster rehab and possibility to reduce existing or induced astigmatism.
At AOZ Heidelberg we offer both cataract surgery methods.
After surgery with one of the methods mentioned a new intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted by the surgeon.

Intraocular lenses (IOLs)
A cataract surgery replaces the opaque lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It is the patients choice, if the replacement is a standard or a premium lens.
Standard intraocular lenses are of good quality, but offer no added value.
Types of premium lenses:
Aspheric lenses for less glare and better dim-light vision
Toric IOLs to correct existing astigmatism
MFLs for vision in all distances without glasses

In Germany standard cataract surgery is covered by German statutory health insurance. Some insurances even cover premium lens or multifocal lens surgery, even with Catalys Femtosecondlaser. Ask your insurance agent.
